Step 3 Practice

In this step, they are supposed to finish exercise B and fill in the new words in the blank to check your memory. Later I will invite one of them to share his or her answer. One of my students Jessie thinks that the answer should “dig” “remove” “brush” “record” and “explore” respectively. She will be praised for the correct answer.

Another activities is translation. I will write down several long sentences related to the topic we have learned today on the blackboard, let the students translate them into Chinese without the help of dictionaries. 5 minutes will be given. Later I will check their answers and correct some mistakes and give some advice if necessary. Exercise is unavoidable and indispensable if the students want to master the target words.

Step 4 Production

After learning and memorizing these new words, they need to work in group of 4 and have a discussion. I will create an situation for them, that is they can imagine that they are going to visit a historical figure this summer, please work out a travel plan with their partners within 5 minutes. During this time, they should think about three questions ahead: Q1 Which heritage site are you going to visit? Q2 Why do you want to go? Q3 What are you going to do during the traveling? After that, some representatives of each group should be responsible for a oral report based on their discussion. Meanwhile, some positive evaluation will be given to them for they can answer the questions bravely to enhance their English learning, which can give them a chance to communicate with their partners and apply the target knowledge into practical situation.

Step 5 Summary and homework

At the end of the class, I will summarize what we have learned today together with my students. Then, I will leave them a homework, that is after class, they are supposed to pick one of their favorite subjects and write down 10 related words with the help of dictionary. Then design a poster advocating protection of heritage sites with 100 words we have studied in this class.

At the end of the class, we will come to the “Everyday English”. Today, I will teach them a new English proverb — More hasty, less speed. This proverb tells us that we should be patient and make step one by one to make our dreams come true.

Summary and homework can help the students consolidate what we have learned today and deepen their impression about the new knowledge.
