Show students an apple and ask them what it is. Based on their previous knowledge and life experience, they are likely to give the correct answer. Then lead in today’s topic — fruit.
Justification: Enjoying the song can create a relaxed and enjoyable learning atmosphere for this lesson. What’s more, students can get ready for the lesson by learning the song related to the topic.
Step 2 Pre-listening
1. Teach words and sentence pattern.
Show students different fruits, such as grapes, bananas, apples and so on. Based on the previous step, students already know how to speak apple in English. Thereby, show three apples and guide students to learn the plural form — apples. Teach other words in a similar way and present on the blackboard.
Show two stickers, one with a smiley face and one with a gloomy face. Put the stickers next to the apples and grapes on the blackboard, and say: “I like apples and I don’t like grapes.” Guide students to understand and learn the sentence pattern — “I like... I don’t like...”.
2. Predication
Ask students to look at the picture of the listening material: Zhang Peng and his friends are enjoying some delicious food. Ask students to guess what Zhang Peng likes to eat and what he doesn’t like to eat based on the picture. Students can exchange ideas with their desk mates.
Justification: Explaining the words and sentence pattern before actually listening to the material can help students complete the listening task smoothly and understand the listening content. Besides, making predictions according to the picture can stimulate students’ interest in listening.
Step 3 While-listening
1. Extensive listening
Ask students to listen to the tape and check their predictions. Meanwhile, they need to answer the following questions.
Q1: What does Mike like?
Q2: What does Zhang Peng like?
2. Intensive listening
Listen to the tape for the second time. Ask students to fill in the blanks and then complete the match. After checking the answers, teach students the functions and meanings of the following new sentences.
(1) Have some ________.
(2) ________ I have some bananas?
a. Here you are.
b. Thanks.
3. Imitation
Ask students to listen to the tape for the last time and imitate it. They should pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation.
Justification: The purpose of this step is to develop students’ listening ability, and accumulate some listening strategies. Besides, by listening three times they can get a deeper understanding of the conversation.
Step 4 Post-listening
1. Role play
Students need to act out the dialogue in groups of four. One acts as Mike, one acts as Zhang Peng, one acts as the girl and the last one acts as the young man. Five minutes later, three groups will be invited to perform in the front.
2. Set a real situation
Imagine that they are in a supermarket. One plays a salesperson, and one plays a customer who wants to buy fruit. They need to make up a new dialogue in pairs using the sentence patterns they learnt today. After sharing, positive evaluation and feedback will also be given.
Justification: Role-play can help students consolidate the vocabulary and sentence patterns they have learned in this lesson. Creating a real situation can help students realize the value of learning English and learn to use it in their daily communication.
Step 5 Summary and Homework
