Teaching aims
Knowledge aims
1. Students will have a deep understanding of California and Joshua Tree National Park.
2. Students can know the difference between movies and real situations.
Ability aims:
1. Students can grasp the main idea and detailed information about the listening materials through fast listening and careful listening.
2. Students can master the listening strategies, for example, pay attention to the repeated words, take some notes, and so on.
Emotional aims:
1. Students will know more knowledge around the world and love our country.
2. Through group work, students can know each other better and their cooperation spirit can be strengthened.
Cultural awareness aims:
1. Students will know more about California and Joshua Tree National Park.
2. In learning and daily communication, students can initially notice the similarities and differences between Chinese and foreign cultures.
Key point
Students will improve their listening abilities and know more about California according to fast listening and careful listening.

1. Students learn some new knowledge around the world and love their own countries.
2. Students can know each other better and their cooperation spirit can be strengthened.
Teaching procedures
Step 1 Warming-up
1. Daily greeting.
2. Ask students what American movie they like best and what their feelings about American life is, so they may give feedback such as “I like the movie The Fast and the Furious and I think Americans like adventures” “La La Land is my favourite movie and it’s so romantic for all of Americans if they feel happy they will sing a song and dance”, etc.
(Justification: The topic of the free talk is close to their daily life, every student can talk about their understanding of American movies and American life. Also, it will lay a solid foundation for further study.)
Step 2 Pre-listening
1. Present the pictures of the textbook on the screen to students.
2. Ask students: “What can you see in the picture ?”
3. Encourage students to describe those pictures, they may tell “there are some huge stones and it looks deserted”, “I can see some strange trees there”.
4. Continue to ask students one question “Can you have a prediction about the following listening materials according to those pictures and all the exercises on the textbook?”. Then collect some ideas of students such as “It’s about a place of America”, “It’s about California.” Do not comment but tell them they can check their answers later while listening.
